Pharyngitis is a generic term for inflammation of the pharynx. The pharynx is a generic term for the throat. The pharynx is anatomically divided up into the Nasopharynx, Oropharynx, and Hypopharynx. Inflammation can be traumatic or infectious. Infection is primarily viral, however, bacteria and fungi may play a role. When they do one must discern the difference between colonization and infection. Infection is often micro invasion and I would term it as detrimental colonization.
