Steps involved in the surgery

  1. The surgeon makes incisions so that the skin of the nose can be lifted from its underlying bone and cartilage support system. When possible, incisions are made inside the nose so that they are invisible. In some cases, an incision is made in the area of skin separating the nostrils. To increase his accuracy, the doctor wears a headlight and uses special retractors to keep the area highly visible.
  2. He then removes or rearranges the underlying bone and cartilage to provide the desired structure.
  3. Next, the surgeon re-drapes the skin over the new frame and closes the incisions.
  4. Finally, he applies either a splint to the outside of the nose to help retain the new shape during healing, or soft nasal supports that permit nasal breathing post-operatively. He may place soft, absorbent material inside the nose to maintain stability along the dividing wall of the air passages.
